Our Grants & Awards

Our global health funding opportunities support faculty and students at the University of Minnesota in their global health endeavors around the world. 

We have a number of programs that accept applications each year, for themes ranging from UMN faculty initiating novel global health research, UMN students seeking scholarships for courses abroad, and UMN staff developing global health programming with partners around the world. Our programs include seed grants, CGHSR scholars, engagement grants, scholarships, and global health fellowships. Each of these programs support projects and partners that align with our values on social responsibility.

These fellowships provide outstanding opportunities for highly motivated individuals to experience mentored research training at top-ranked, NIH-funded research centers in East Africa. Each year the fellowships begin with an intensive orientation program in July, followed by 11 months of mentored clinical research training at international partner institutions.

Global Infectious Disease Administration Development Award for Low-and Middle-Income Country Institutions
National Institutes of Health
The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to invite applications from research institutions in low- to middle-income countries (LMIC) to provide senior administrators from these institutions with advanced training in the management of NIH grants. The ultimate goal is to improve oversight of NIAID grant awards and compliance with NIH funding policies and Federal research funding requirements for NIAID-supported foreign institutions in low to middle-income countries.

Horizon 2020 - The EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation
Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme ever with nearly €80 billion of funding available over 7 years (2014 to 2020).

PEER Grant
Partnerships for Enhanced Engagement in Research

The purpose of the Fulbright program is to increase mutual understanding between people of the United States and other countries through the exchange of persons, knowledge, and skills. Students pursuing a graduate degree at the University of Minnesota must apply through the Graduate School Fellowship Office.

The Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Global Change (ICGC) offers fellowships that provide financial support for graduate students at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Nominees should have backgrounds and interests that identify them as outstanding students who are clearly committed to the interdisciplinary study of the global south in the context of global change.

The Council of Graduate Students (COGS) gives awards to Masters and Ph.D. students for travel to conferences and educational programs. This award aims to help students with limited funding to further develop professional skills and contacts.

The Afya Bora Fellowship in Global Health Leadership works to fill the identified gap in training for African and U.S. health professionals working in global health.

Benjamin H. Kean Travel Fellowship in Tropical Medicine
The American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene
Provides travel expenses for medical students who arrange clinical tropical medicine or tropical medicine research electives in areas afflicted by diseases or illnesses common in the tropics.

Boren Scholarships and Fellowships
Boren Scholarships and Fellowships, initiatives of the National Security Education Program, provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. graduate and undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. 

Global Health Corps Fellowships
Global Health Corps provides a yearlong paid fellowship for young professionals from diverse backgrounds to serve on the frontlines of the fight for global health equity at existing health organizations and government agencies. Fellows are currently working in Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Malawi, Zambia and the United States.

Gates Millennium Scholars Program
Continuing Gates Millennium Scholars may request funding for a graduate degree program in one of the following discipline areas: computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health or science.
