Applications for the Center for Global Health and Social Responsibility’s Global Health Case Competition are now open! Applications are due Nov. 30 by 8 a.m.

The Competition

The Global Health Case Competition is an opportunity for University of Minnesota students to craft innovative solutions to pertinent challenges in global health.

Through simulated “cases” outlining mock scenarios, students will have the opportunity to hone their problem-solving and critical thinking skills. The case solutions from each team will be judged by a panel of global health experts from the University of Minnesota.

Teams and Eligibility

Graduate students (master’s and doctoral level), professional students, and upper-level undergraduate students from across the University of Minnesota who are interested in global health are encouraged to participate.

Post-graduate and post-doctoral fellows/residents are eligible to participate in teams this year as well.

Teams will consist of four to six students from three or more UMN schools. Students may apply as individuals and will be assigned to a multidisciplinary team. Students who prefer to assemble their own team must ensure that the team has three or more UMN Schools represented.

Students from Duluth and Rochester can assemble their own team, or any students can indicate on their application that they are open to a virtual team and be paired with students across UMN campuses.

Cash Prizes

A distinguished multi-disciplinary panel of judges will evaluate the teams’ recommendations on Competition Day. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three teams:

  • First place: $3,500
  • Second place: $1,500
  • Third place: $500

The first-place team will go on to compete at the virtual 2026 International Emory Global Health Case Competition. The competition will take place in March of 2026.

Case Competition Coaches

Each team will be paired with a coach, who can help to provide feedback on students’ proposed case solutions. Students are welcome to nominate a UMN faculty or staff member to be their coach
