Global Health Day Panel: Shared Perspectives, Shared Solutions: Advancing Equity in Global Health

Effective global health is equitable and takes into consideration the goals, values, and welfare of all parties involved.

Cultural humility and empathy are integral to engaging in global health practice. In order to support positive outcomes in our global communities, it’s imperative that practitioners consider the culture, history and needs of the community they’re working with.

Too often, unfortunately, we as global health practitioners fail to work with partner countries and instead work for them. We fail to learn from our global partners, and instead focus only on teaching. This partnership imbalance has the potential to cause lasting harm, unintended or otherwise.

This panel will touch on considerations of equity in global health and provide strategies for students, researchers and practitioners to evaluate if they’re acting with social responsibility in their global health work.

Panelists:

Sarah Hoffman, PhD, MPH, MSN, RN

Associate Professor, UMN School of Nursing

Kelly Searle, PhD

Assistant Professor, Division of Epidemiology & Community Health, UMN School of Public Health

Darlisha Williams, MPH

Senior Program Manager, Research, Center for Global Health and Social Responsibility

Past Global Health Days at the University of Minnesota

To recognize and celebrate the significant achievements in global health work at the University of Minnesota, the Center for Global Health and Social Responsibility hosts a Global Health Day in early spring of every year. During the event, students, staff, and faculty from a wide variety of schools and colleges, areas of study, perspectives, and diverse identities showcase their work, attend the event, or present on major global health issues.
