Afghan University Partnership

Building capacity of Kabul University of Medical Sciences (KUMS) faculty to train the future health workforce of Afghanistan.

About the project

The University of Minnesota is partnered with Kabul University of Medical Sciences (KUMS) to improve clinical, educational, professional and leadership skills for health sciences faculty in Kabul, Afghanistan. Funded by a sub-award grant from FHI 360, the project is part of the Afghanistan University Support and Workforce Development Program (USWDP) - a five-year USAID project that aims to increase the skills and employability of professionally-qualified Afghan men and women in the public and private sectors.

Goals

The goal of the project is to improve the academic quality of the KUMS faculties of Midwifery, Medical Lab Technology, Dentistry, and Anesthesiology. In order to ensure quality pre-service education that results in a larger and more competent Afgan healthcare workforce, the project is working to:

  • Develop the clinical knowledge and educational skills of the KUMS faculty
  • Develop the pedagogical and leadership competencies of the KUMS faculty
  • Advise on teaching and learning equipment, resources, and approaches based on educational best practices and the realities of the KUMS context
  • Establish University partnership relationships aimed to be sustainable over time

Key Activities

  • International Exchanges:  UMN faculty and partners develop specialized, short-course trainings for KUMS faculty that teach in the disciplines of midwifery, dentistry, anesthesiology, and medical lab technology. Exchanges have been held in multiple locations around the world, including India and Rwanda
  • Peer Mentoring: UMN faculty and partners are engaged in structured, remote mentorship program that pairs mentors with mentees from KUMS
